The community and the assignment

Duncaster is a LifePlan community in Bloomfield, Connecticut, on a 94-acre campus. It describes a focus on art, education and wellness, and in 2024 it marked its fortieth anniversary.

For The Valley Book, the photographs move through a domestic setting: armchairs near the fireplace, a kitchen stove, a puzzle table and two portraits together. The rooms and activities give the feature a human scale.

A community of this size has many possible stories. These photographs keep to a small, domestic scale: seating by a fireplace, a stove, a puzzle table and two close portraits.

The fireside opener

The hero image shows two older adults seated in armchairs beside a fireplace and large windows. A fireplace and big windows make a natural setting for conversation, and the wide frame leaves room to see the comfortable furniture.

The large windows give the room a bright, open feeling, and the armchairs placed side by side suggest company. It is a scene a reader can imagine stepping into.

Starting a lifestyle set with a wide image is a good habit. It tells the viewer where they are before the closer frames take over, and it gives a layout designer a landscape image to run across a page opening.

Everyday activity

Two upright frames capture ordinary activity. Two older adults stand together beside a pot on a kitchen stove, and an older woman works on a jigsaw puzzle with a man standing beside her.

Cooking and puzzles are familiar activities. Including them gives the feature a human scale that a list of amenities cannot, and the close framing keeps attention on the people and what they are doing.

Both frames are upright, so they fit narrow columns in a guide. The kitchen picture has the warmth of a shared meal being prepared, while the puzzle picture shows a slower, quieter pastime, and the contrast between them gives the pair variety.

Activities give the hands and eyelines a clear place in the frame. The kitchen and puzzle pictures combine the people with something specific to look at, which makes the setting easier to understand.

Quiet closeness

The last two frames are the most intimate. Two older adults stand close together looking toward one another, and two older adults smile together in a home interior.

Ending with smiles and attention gives the sequence an emotional close. Both images are upright and simple, with the people clearly the subject.

The simple setting lets the faces and the space between the people do the work. In an image like this, how close people stand and where they look say more than any prop could.

Planning takeaways

For lifestyle photography in a community setting, plan around real activities such as cooking, games and conversation, and get permission from everyone who appears. Allow time for people to settle into an activity so expressions look natural.

Mix a wide scene-setting frame with closer images, and let rooms with good window light do the work. That keeps the set varied and welcoming.

It is also wise to plan around the time of day. Rooms with windows can look very different in the morning than in the afternoon, so pick a time when the space looks its best and the people involved are comfortable.

Share the finished images with the people who appear in them before publication. In a community setting, that courtesy builds trust and makes it easier to photograph again.
