Three team group portraits photographed for Avon Health Center in Avon, from the entrance awning to a white gazebo and a warm interior.
Photographed for The Valley Book.

Avon Health Center is a family-owned skilled nursing center offering short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. Its website recounts that Leonard J. Schwartz purchased the business in 1974 and expanded it in 1975.
For a place where people live and recover, the staff are the heart of the story. We photographed team group portraits for The Valley Book, using three different settings so the set reads as a place as well as a group.
That history is a reminder of how long a care organization can be part of a community. A team portrait is a way to show who carries that work forward today, in a form that fits a guide, a brochure or a web page.
Across the three portraits, changes in the background give the same group a different emphasis. The entrance includes the center’s name, the gazebo opens up the setting, and the interior brings furniture and warmer tones into view.

The lead portrait gathers the team beneath the green Avon Health Center entrance awning. Using the entrance gives the picture a built-in label: a reader sees the name and the welcome in the same frame, and the green awning supplies a strong, simple color.
The other two portraits move away from the front door. Variety matters in group portraits because each location offers a different mood, and a publication can pick whichever suits its layout.
Group portraits at an entrance are also useful because they anchor the viewer. Someone searching for a place to visit sees the same awning they will see when they arrive, and the portrait and the building become linked in memory.
In one frame the team stands outdoors in front of a white gazebo. The gazebo's structure helps frame the group and gives the portrait an open, friendly setting.
In the other the team is inside a warmly furnished room. Warm furnishings tell a reader that the interior is meant to feel comfortable. Seen together, the outdoor and indoor frames show both sides of the center: the grounds and the rooms.
Each of the three portraits is upright, which suits the way a team can be arranged in rows and still fill the frame. The consistent format also makes the set easy to lay out on a page: any of the three can lead a feature, and the other two can support it.

Group portraits of larger teams take planning. Pick locations that can hold the whole group with space for everyone to be seen, and arrange people in rows or tiers so no face is hidden. Check times when staff can step away from their duties.
Offer more than one setting. An entrance for recognition, an outdoor space for openness and an interior for warmth give a care organization a flexible set for websites, print and community features.
A final point: schedule a few spare minutes for every location. Moving a team indoors or out takes longer than most people expect, and a calm pace helps everyone look relaxed when the picture is taken.
When a set will be reused across a website, a brochure and a local guide, supply it in a mix of shapes. Upright portraits like these suit columns and cover panels, while a wider crop of the same scene can be made for a banner.
