Center of Dental Excellence: dental team portrait photography

Team portraits that place the people of the Center of Dental Excellence outdoors, with a bridge shaping the group image and a closer frame that brings out personality.

Photographed for The West Hartford Book.

The assignment

The Center of Dental Excellence was part of our photography for the West Hartford Book. The people we were photographing wanted the bridge included in their portraits.

That preference shaped everything that followed. A group portrait asks us to solve two problems at once: how to arrange several people so every face is easy to read, and how to make the place around them feel like part of the picture rather than an accident behind them. With the bridge requested from the start, the second problem had a clear answer, and the work became finding the best way to use it.

Working the bridge

A bridge is more than scenery. A structure like this gives a photographer lines to compose with and a natural frame to place people within. It also offers many possible positions, and a small change in where people stand, or where we stand, can change how the whole picture reads.

So we tried variations. We worked through different compositions on the bridge instead of settling on the first arrangement that looked good, looking for the one in which the structure supports the team without overpowering it. The wider portrait at the top of this page is where that exploration landed: the bridge frames the group, and the group stays the clear subject.

From wide to close

The closer portrait shows the same outdoor setting with less around the team. Moving in changes what a viewer notices: the bridge recedes, and faces, expressions and the way people stand together take over.

Having both frames matters because they do different jobs. The wide portrait tells a viewer where the team is and what they chose; the close portrait introduces the people themselves.

The finished photographs

The finished pair gives the Center of Dental Excellence what its team asked for, the bridge, handled in two ways. One keeps the structure and the whole group in view; the other trims the surroundings and lets the team lead. Both are vertical portraits with the people clearly separated from their setting and easy to read at a glance.
