What portrait photography covers

This page is for personal and general portrait sessions. If you need business portraits, headshots for a team or a brand-focused set of images, the pages below are planned for those needs instead.

  • Individual portraits

A portrait of you for yourself, for a gift or for a profile, in a style you choose.

  • Family portraits

Relaxed group and individual images of the people in your family.

  • Couple portraits

Portraits of two people together, for an anniversary, an engagement or no reason at all.

  • Senior and graduation portraits

Portraits that reflect a person's style at a turning point.

  • Milestones and holidays

Anniversaries, holiday photos and other occasions you want to mark.

  • Special sessions

Maternity and pet sessions have their own pages with planning notes for each.

Family portraits: who is in the photos

A family session works best when you decide who needs to be in the pictures before the day. Tell us whether you want the whole family together, parents with children, siblings, grandparents, or portraits of each person, and we will plan the order so no one waits long.

  • Name the groupings you want, such as the whole family, each household, siblings and grandparents
  • Mention children's ages and any naps or meals the schedule should respect
  • Choose coordinated clothes that feel like your family; they do not have to match
  • Pick a setting that suits everyone: home, a park or a studio
  • Decide what the photos are for, such as a holiday card, wall prints or an album

Couple portraits: for any stage

Couple portraits are not only for people about to marry. They suit an anniversary, a milestone, a move or no occasion at all. We guide you through relaxed prompts, such as walking together or sitting close, so you do not need to know how to pose.

If you are engaged and want a session before the wedding, see our engagement sessions page. If the photos are for a wedding day, see our wedding photography page.

  • Tell us the occasion, or that there is none
  • Choose a place that matters to the two of you, indoors or out
  • Wear clothes you are comfortable moving in
  • Say how you will use the photos, such as prints, a gift or a profile

Looking for something more specific?

Portrait needs overlap, so here is where each one is covered in detail. Business headshots for individuals and teams, corporate team photography and branding photography each have their own page because the planning is different from a personal session.

  • Business headshots for professionals and teams: see corporate headshots
  • A group portrait of your company: see corporate team photography
  • Images of you and your business for a website and social media: see branding photography
  • A session during pregnancy: see maternity photography
  • A portrait of your pet: see pet portraits

Choosing a setting

  • Studio

Controlled light and a simple backdrop, good for clean portraits and for any weather.

  • Outdoors

Natural light and scenery, best in the softer light of the morning or the end of the day.

  • At home

Familiar surroundings that suit family and lifestyle images.

  • Your workplace or another place that matters

A location with meaning, when the portrait should show where you work or live.

How we plan a session

We start with the purpose of the portraits: who they are for, where they will be seen and what you want them to say. From there we agree on the setting, the people involved and what to wear, so the session feels easy.

On the day, we guide you through posing and keep the pace relaxed. You do not need to know how to pose, and you do not need to feel at ease on camera before you arrive.

  • Choose clothes that you are comfortable moving in and that suit the setting
  • Tell us who needs to be in the images, including children and pets
  • Decide how you will use the images, such as prints, a card or a profile
  • Allow time so no one feels rushed, especially with children

Portraits around other events

Some portrait needs sit alongside a bigger plan. If you are marking an anniversary or a holiday gathering, or planning a wedding, we can photograph those too and keep the look consistent.

Common questions

Is this the same as a corporate headshot?

No. Headshots and team photography are planned for professional use, with consistent lighting and a brand in mind. Personal portraits are planned around the person and the occasion.

Can I bring more than one outfit?

Usually yes. Tell us how many looks you are thinking about, and we will plan the session length with you.
