Christmas portraits

Christmas portraits videography and photography in Connecticut

A Christmas portrait session is about the things your family actually does at this time of year: the tree, the stockings, the matching pajamas, the mug of cocoa. Legend Photo & Film in West Hartford photographs Christmas portraits across Connecticut and can add a short video when you want to keep the sound and movement too.

A short Christmas video, if you want movement and sound

Some families want more than a still frame of the tree. A short keepsake video can hold the sound of the kids on the stairs, the ripping of wrapping paper, a grandparent reading aloud, or the quiet of a morning before everyone is up.

We keep the video light and optional. It can be a moving Christmas greeting to send to relatives far away, a few short messages from each person, or ambient moments from a tradition you already have. Nobody needs to perform for the camera.

Christmas portrait photography at the center of the session

Photography is the heart of this service. We build portraits around warm, low light: string lights glowing behind you, a fireplace, the tree lit in a dim room, or an outdoor setting such as a tree farm or a decorated street that you choose.

You get a mix of posed family portraits and unposed frames of real moments, such as a child leaning on the ornament-covered branches or a parent straightening a stocking. The finished gallery is made for sharing online and for print.

  • Indoors by the tree

Soft ambient light, lit branches and the room as your family lives in it.

  • Outdoors at a tree farm or street

Cold-weather portraits against evergreens or decorated storefronts, location chosen by you.

  • Traditions

Cocoa, baking, stockings and matching pajamas photographed as they happen.

Questions before you decide?

Tell us about your family and your traditions. Share your date, location and coverage needs so we can prepare a scoped quote.

How the photos and the optional video are planned together

When you want both, we plan them as one session so the family is not asked to do everything twice. The portraits come first while everyone is fresh, then the video moments follow in the same setting and the same outfits.

One person cannot do every job at once. If you want portraits and a live tradition captured at the same time, such as a gift-opening, we talk through whether an additional operator makes sense for that schedule.

How we plan and cover your Christmas portrait session

We start with how your family celebrates, then plan photography first and any video around it, so the session feels like part of your season and not a chore.

  • Before the session

We ask about your traditions, who will be in the portraits, which images matter most, and whether you want a video. We agree on a coverage window, a location you arrange, the deliverables and a scoped quote. One adult is our contact, and we tell you what we need from you and what we handle.

  • Preparing the family

We suggest outfits as ideas only, such as coordinated colors or matching pajamas, and avoid loud logos. We talk about how to keep young children comfortable, how to include grandparents and what to do if someone is camera-shy. For any video messages, we offer prompts, not memorized lines.

  • Coordinating the setting

We confirm whether you are at home, at a tree farm or on a decorated street, who handles access and permission there, what light is available and a weather fallback. If the plan includes a fireplace or string lights, we check how they will be on. Accessibility and comfort are planned for.

  • On the day

We arrive for the agreed setup, read the light, and begin with the portraits you most want. We direct gently when it helps and step back for natural moments. If video is included we choose its moments around the photography, and we adjust if a child needs a break or the weather changes.

  • After the session

We explain how the gallery is selected and edited, the color choices that keep the warm light natural, and the formats for sharing and print. Any video options, such as a greeting or vertical cut, are agreed in the scope. Review and delivery checkpoints are set with you, not left open.

Choosing photos only, video only, or both

Many families book Christmas portraits as photography alone, and that is a complete session. Others add a short video because they want to hear a child’s voice or send a greeting that moves. A few want video of a morning tradition with a small set of portraits alongside it.

Tell us what you hope to have on the shelf, in the card or on the screen next December, and we will suggest a scope. Sessions are available throughout the year, including for early holiday cards.

Planning your Christmas portraits

The dedicated pages go deeper. Our Christmas portrait photography page covers poses, light, outfits and gallery delivery. Our Christmas portrait videography page covers keepsake videos, greetings and ambient morning moments.

If your family celebrates a mix of traditions, our inclusive holiday family portrait page may fit better, while this one stays focused on Christmas. Location, props, trees and any decorated spaces are arranged by you and confirmed at inquiry.

What to send when you ask about your Christmas portrait session

Share your date, location and coverage needs so we can prepare a scoped quote. Whatever you do not know yet, we will ask about.

  • Your preferred date and the town or setting you have in mind
  • Who will be in the portraits, including children and grandparents
  • Whether you want photos only, a short video, or both
  • Traditions or details you want in the frame
  • How you plan to use the images, for cards, walls or sharing

Common questions

Do you provide the tree, props or location?

Your family arranges the tree, decorations and location, whether that is your living room, a tree farm or a decorated street. We help you think through what will photograph well and confirm access and permissions at inquiry. What is available for any specific setting depends on the scope we agree together.

Is the video required with the portraits?

No. Photography is a complete session on its own. A short video, a moving greeting or ambient morning moments are optional additions for families who want movement and sound. If you add one, we plan it with the photography so the family is not asked to repeat everything.

Can children and grandparents be included?

Yes. We build the session around the people you bring. For young children we keep things short and flexible, and for older relatives we plan comfortable seating, light and a calm pace. Tell us ahead about anyone with particular needs so we can plan around them.

How do we get a quote?

We prepare a scoped quote from your date, location and coverage needs. Tell us who will be in the portraits, where you would like to shoot and whether you want video, and we will respond with a plan. Sessions are available throughout the year, not only in December.
