Christmas portraits photography in Connecticut

A Christmas portrait should look like your family at its warmest. We photograph by the tree, beside the fireplace, in matching pajamas, with cocoa in hand or outdoors among evergreens and festive streets. The session is calm and the gallery is made for cards, walls and sharing.

Moments and poses that suit a Christmas session

We begin with the portraits you most want, such as the whole family together, then move to smaller groups and individuals. After that we leave space for natural moments, like stockings being hung or a child tugging at an ornament.

A usual sequence moves from posed to candid, so the family relaxes as the session goes on. You will not be asked to hold a pose for long, and we change the plan if a child needs a break.

  • Whole-family portraits by the tree
  • Sibling, couple and grandparent pairings
  • Matching pajamas and stocking moments
  • Cocoa, baking and ornament traditions

Warm light, string lights and gentle bokeh

Low, warm light is the reason these portraits feel like Christmas. We use the glow of the tree, a lamp or a fireplace and place the family so string lights fall softly out of focus behind them.

We balance color so skin looks natural and not orange, and we use subtle bounce or a soft flash only when the room and the family are comfortable with it. In very dim rooms, we choose shutter speeds that keep small children sharp.

Questions before you decide?

Tell us how your family celebrates. Share your date, location and coverage needs so we can prepare a scoped quote.

How we plan and cover your Christmas portrait photography

We focus on warm light, simple direction and a pace your family can keep, whether you are at home or outdoors.

  • Before the session

We ask who is in the portraits, which images you want most, how you will use them and whether you celebrate with certain traditions. We agree on a coverage window, a location you arrange, the deliverables and a scoped quote. One adult is our contact, and we explain what we need from you.

  • Preparing the family

We send outfit ideas as suggestions, such as coordinated tones or matching pajamas. We explain to parents how to keep children comfortable, how to include grandparents and what to do with shy teenagers. We do not make everyone pose continuously, and we keep candid moments natural.

  • Coordinating the setting

We confirm whether you are inside, at a tree farm or on a decorated street, who handles access and permission, what the light and weather will be, and how we handle a change in plan. We check the tree lighting, fireplace and room layout so we can set up without disturbing anyone.

  • On the day

We arrive for the agreed setup, read the light and start with the group portrait while everyone is fresh. We guide when it helps and step back when the moment is real. If a video is included, we coordinate roles so it does not interrupt portraits, and we discuss an additional operator if both need to happen together.

  • After the session

We explain how we select and edit the gallery, how we balance warm light, and which files you receive for web and print. Review and delivery checkpoints are agreed with you, along with any usage you need for cards or albums. We do not set unlimited revisions or promise turnaround beyond the scope.

Indoors by the tree or outdoors in the cold

Many families choose their own living room, where the decorations are already meaningful. Others prefer a tree farm, a decorated street or a yard with lights, and we plan clothing and timing for the weather.

  • Indoors

The tree, the mantel and the room as it feels at home.

  • Tree farm

Evergreens, cold air and a rustic backdrop you arrange.

  • Decorated street

Storefront glow and festive details, with permissions confirmed.

  • Backyard

String lights and soft dusk color.

Outfits, details and the little things

Outfits are suggestions only. We encourage coordinated colors or matching pajamas, comfortable shoes and layers for outdoors, and we avoid anything that will distract from faces. We also photograph the ornaments, wrapping and stockings that tell the story of your holiday.

Detail frames give the gallery texture and are lovely alongside group portraits in a card or album.

Your gallery and how to use it

We select and edit the strongest frames and deliver a gallery for web sharing and print-ready use. Cards, framed portraits and albums are all possible, and we discuss sizes and usage during planning.

If you add a short video, we deliver it separately so each part is easy to find. Sessions can be booked throughout the year to prepare holiday cards early.

What to send when you ask about your Christmas portrait session

Share your date, location and coverage needs so we can prepare a scoped quote. Whatever you do not know yet, we will ask about.

  • Your preferred date and the town or setting you have in mind
  • Who will be photographed and their ages
  • Indoor, outdoor or a mix, and any tree farm or street you want
  • Outfit ideas such as matching pajamas
  • Whether images are for cards, wall art or an album

Common questions

Where do Christmas sessions take place?

Wherever your family arranges: your home by the tree, a tree farm, a decorated street or a lit backyard. We help you choose a place that photographs well and plan around weather and access. Permissions and any location rules are confirmed at inquiry, based on the setting you choose.

What should we wear?

Outfits are suggestions only. Coordinated colors or matching pajamas work well, and layers help outdoors. We recommend avoiding large logos and busy patterns that can distract from faces. If you are unsure, send us a photo of what you are considering and we will give you honest feedback before the session.

Can we add a short video to our portraits?

Yes, as an optional addition. A short keepsake video, a moving greeting or ambient morning moments can be planned alongside the photography. Photography remains a complete session on its own, and we only add video when you want movement and sound in the final result.

How do you prepare a quote?

We prepare a scoped quote from your date, location and coverage needs. Tell us who will be in the portraits, where you want to shoot and how you plan to use the gallery. Sessions are available throughout the year, including early in the season for holiday cards.
