BPS Periodontics: dental practice, staff and facility photography

Practice photography that introduces BPS Periodontics from the outside in: the building, the reception desk, the people and the treatment rooms.

Photographed for The West Hartford Book.

The assignment

BPS Periodontics was part of our photography for the West Hartford Book. A practice has several stories to tell, so we looked at it from the outside in: the white building from above, the branded reception desk where visitors first arrive, the people, and the rooms where the work happens.

The aerial view sets the scene. It shows the building as one clear, simple shape, a quiet introduction before the photographs move inside.

Putting faces to the practice

Portraits give a practice a human side. An individual portrait, with a confident, arms-crossed smile, introduces one person. The three-person team portrait shows people working alongside one another.

Both are vertical frames that keep the people close and clearly visible, with the background kept simple behind them.

Lighting within a working space

Some of these images had to be made in tight spaces. Treatment rooms are built for the work, not for photography, and a small room leaves little space to place a light or move around. We used our knowledge of lighting to make good photographs despite the limited space.

That knowledge is about controlling where light falls: lighting that is placed and aimed with care helps faces and equipment read clearly, even when walls are close and there is no room to step back. It is also why lighting is part of planning the frame rather than an afterthought: in a small room, where the light comes from helps decide where we can stand and what the picture can include.

The finished photographs

The finished set takes a viewer through a periodontics practice: the building, the front desk, individual and team portraits, and scenes with handheld equipment, a person in the dental chair holding a mirror, and a man in black scrubs mid-gesture. The clinical frames are clear and readable, and the portraits keep the faces front and centre.

Taken together, the photographs cover the practice from several angles: exterior, arrival, people and working rooms. Together they introduce the people, the practice and the work that happens there.
